A lot of questions are going to come up when you are expecting a mother. When it comes to pregnancy and dental care, there are probably some concerns you have, but there’s no need to worry!

Our team at Dr Nawale’s DentoCare at Aurangabad guides you through your questions and provides you with the best dental care possible throughout your pregnancy.

Up to 18 out of every 100 premature births may be triggered by periodontal diseases. Hormonal changes in pregnancy lead to an increase in gum diseases that affect the health of the developing baby.

To provide better oral health care, more knowledge needs to be made available to pregnant women and the medical community.

Oral problems associated with pregnancy include gingivitis and periodontal infection. There is an increase in the hormones estrogen and progesterone, these affect periodontal disease progress and wound healing.

During pregnancy, there is an increase in some micro-organisms which increase the tendency of gums to bleed and worsen gingival inflammation as a result, pregnancy patients have severe gingival inflammation with reasonably low plaque levels.

Maternal periodontitis has a risk for preterm birth and low birth weight which are the major cause of infant mortality.

To deliver adequate and standard prenatal care to any pregnant woman, dental and medical practitioners should recognize oral health care as an integral part of overall parental care.

Another concern is that the bacterial agent responsible for the formation of dental caries Streptococcus Mutans can be transmitted directly from mother to child after birth.

Commonly faced gum problems during pregnancy are

1) Gingivitis – mostly during the second trimester

2) Pregnancy epulis /pyogenic granuloma.

A mother's inadequate calcium intake affects bones and teeth. Calcium can get available through milk, cheese, margarine, fatty fish, and eggs which protect your bone mass and meet the nutritional need of a baby.

During pregnancy craving for food especially sugary snacks lead to caries.

Vomiting /Morning sickness can coat you're your teeth and oral cavity with acid which may lead to damage to the enamel and result in decay.
